Oberto claims first National High Points Championship

September 21, 2008

The U-6 Oh Boy! Oberto/Miss Madison, driven by Steve David, clinched its first National High Points Championship in the 47-year history of the team, after a second-place finish in Heat 2B at the 2008 San Diego Bayfair powered by the San Diego Union-Tribune. (Complete results and heat draw) Jean Theoret in the U-37 Miss Beacon Plumbing used the inside lane to maintain a lead from start to finish, holding off David and a battered U-13 Graham Trucking/Spirit of Detroit driven by J. Michael Kelly.

Despite finishing second, David needed only to finish the heat in any place to clinch the High Points title. When asked how he felt, David replied, "Oh Boy! This is bigger than winning a single race. More than one boat can win a race during the year, but at the end of the season, there will only be one U-1. The city [of Madison] is planning a big celebration on the first weekend of October."

Brian Perkins in the U-50 Spirit of the NAVY finished in fourth place. Kelly lost his horizontal stabilizer halfway through the heat forcing the yellow and green boat to slow down and settle for third place.

"The V-brace bracket broke which caused us to lose the wing," said Kelly. "I knew something was wrong when it started to get hard to drive and I could see one of my vertical wings in my mirror. Without the wing, the nose tends to dip, and I had to use a different wing strategy to keep the nose and my speed up."
